Crochet Stitches and Tips

Changing Colors in Crochet

Changing colors can be challenging because patterns do not include instructions. However, it's not too difficult to master. In the last stitch of your first color, stop before the last step. For example, if your stitch is a single crochet stitch, stop before pulling the last loop through. Instead of yarning over with the original color, use the new color, leaving a tail. Cut the original yarn color, leaving a tail again. Finish the stitch and continue with the pattern. Once you have moved on with the pattern, you can weave the ends into the fabric to hide them. Using this method creates a seamless color change.

Treble crochet stitch

Treble crochet is a tall stitch that works up quickly and is fun to do. To practice, first chain 15 stitches loosely. Then work the first row as follows:

Working Row 1:

Step 1: Bring yarn twice over the hook (from back to front), skip the first four chains, then insert hook into the fifth chain from the hook.

Step 2: Hook yarn and draw it through the chain stitch and up onto the working area of the hook; you now have four loops on the hook.
Step 3: Hook yarn and draw it through the first two loops on the hook.
You now have three loops on the hook.

Step 4: Hook yarn again and draw it through the next two loops on the hook.
Two loops remain on the hook.

Step 5: Hook yarn and draw it through both remaining loops on the hook.
You have now completed one treble crochet and one loop remains on the hook.

In next chain stitch work a treble crochet as follows:

Step 1: Bring yarn twice over the hook (from back to front); insert hook in the next chain.

Repeat the previous five steps in each remaining chain stitch across.

Hint: In working the first row of treble crochet, the four chains skipped before making the first treble crochet are always counted as a treble crochet stitch.
